The hitchhiker

For what? Whatever the reasons, my story with the Jennifer was finished. And rather abruptly...  

As often in such difficult moments, I jumped in my car and started to drive. At these time, I lived in a beautiful region, mixing mountains and ocean. To changed my mind, I opted for the mountains, with the help of the the Pink Floyd.

The weather was clear, and the afternoon passed rapidly. I stopped on the col, to benefit from the view. A moment later, I began the descent to go back home.

She startled me with her nails on my forearm.

"Shall we go?"

"Well, ur... yes, ok... I'm here.. I mean..." I was clearly looking stupid... I thought "Oh my... shame on me..."

She was sitting near me. I suppose that I responded "Yes... why not" but I had no souvenir of me saying this...

She smiled and responded "Don't worry my friend... I often have that effect..."

She relaxed and closed her eyes, enjoying the moment.

I don't have a lot of souvenir of the rest of the trip: this kind of road requires a lot of attention, even if there's very few cars, because of the seventeen turns till you arrived down the col.

I remember that we started to talk after a few minutes.

"I can see in your eyes that you're suffering a lot. Tell me everything..."

I couldn't resist and explained my situation.

The more I talked to her, the more she seemed interested, and the more it was doing me good.

As we arrived down, she proposed me to make a break on the beach, to benefit from the soft climate and from the sunset.

"Good idea..."

She took my hand, put her head on my shoulder.

I was feeling so happy that all the past struggles and sufferings went away.

She stared at me intensely and said "We should lay down on the sand a  moment..."

What could I respond?

"Let's do it..."

I lied down on my back. Putting her head on my shoulder, she put her hand on my chest and I felt an amazing peace progressively take place within me.

Her soft voice was more than that, I was under her spell, clearly...

"Mike... You should go home, now. Wake-up..."

What? She knows my name and I don't know hers?

I opened my eyes. I wasn't on the sand anymore but in my car.

Alone...

"Sh...t... Again one of those damn' dreams..."

At least my sufferings were gone. All I need to start a new life

Just before I started the engine, I heard that crystal clear voice, saying "It wasn't a dream, Mike. Just a present for you, and her..."

The time I startled and turned over, the voice disappeared slowly with that very same laugh with which all that weird afternoon started, to turn into my cellphone's ringing.

"WTF???"

I grabbed my phone. It was Jen...

I asked, my heart in my throat "Jen? Is it you, really?"

She responded "Yes, I was afraid that you were too angry with me..."

I couldn't help but respond "Guess why..."

She went on "In fact, after that heated exchange I was decided to break. But we've shared so many moments that that afternoon, I thought that it has been one my worst choices. I don't want to loose you, in fact.."

Phew... 

I responded tremblingly "I miss you, where are you Jen?"

Jennifer responded "In your flat. I'm waiting you, and I've something to explain. You won't believe me what I've lived this afternoon. I need to talk..."

I thought "Well... Guess what..."

As I get out of the parking lot, the crystal clear voice came on last time "Mike: be understanding and careful. Both of you deserve it...

I told to myself "Thank you so much, beautiful stranger... and thanks for that second chance..."
